Duckfeet in Denmark have been making shoes by hand for over forty years. Duckfeet are simple and functional, typical of mid-20th century Danish design.

Duckfeet’s foot-formed design allows room for the toes to spread naturally as you walk, and for air to reach the feet. Leather midsoles and uppers breathe and transport moisture away from the foot.

We use leather because it’s strong and long-lasting, but also flexible – allowing the shoe to move with and mould to your individual foot shape.

No two pairs of Duckfeet are exactly alike. Every pair of shoes is treated individually during production, the natural tanning and processing by hand allows for subtle variations in the leather. These variations are highlighted by the particular way you wear them, which imbues each shoe with personality, your story, for your life.
Roskilde features premium full grain, double stitched and reinforced 100% leather uppers, insole, and leather midsole. Our non-toxic, vegetable tanned leather is manufactured according to strict environmental standards. It is drum dyed using high quality, non-toxic dyes and specially treated to be water and dirt repellant. Using traditional European Veldtschoen construction the upper is built up by hand over a flat last then the midsole is double stitched to our 100% natural crepe rubber outsole. Every pair of Duckfeet comes into contact with many experienced hands before they are placed in their box and fitted to your feet.
Shipping within Australia is free. Your order will be sent via Australia Post. Shipping to New Zealand is $30 AUD.

Production and Sustainability

As customers, we are now greatly aware of the conditions our clothes and shoes are produced in, and many of us actively seek out brands that are as transparent and ethical as possible.

We are constantly asked in store about the origin of our leather, where the shoes are made, and how ethical the production is on a whole.

We answer your frequently asked questions below, complete with two videos explaining the production of our leather, and showing the workshop where our shoes are made for you.

Leather

Duckfeet shoes are made from cow hide that comes from Germany and Holland. The hides are tanned at Heinen, a fourth-generation tannery in Germany.

The leather we use is ‘Terra Care’ leather, which is leather that has been sustainably and ethically created to abide by a set of social and environmental values. These values form the best standard of leather production available.

Terra Care leather focuses on:
– Raw material
– By-products
– Social responsibility
– Water
– Energy

The livestock are transported for no more than a 2-hour distance to become hides. Generically, the raw materials or hides are then covered in salt for preservation, but Terra Care removed this process as the hides are transported only a short distance to the tannery, reducing the risk of contamination, transport emissions and waste.

The by-products refer to how much of the hides are used; across the world, 75% of hides are wasted and become by-products, however, Terra Care uses nearly 100% of a hide and dramatically reduce waste.

Currently, 75% of the world’s leather production occurs in undeveloped countries and extremely poor working conditions. Heinen operate their family-run tannery in Wegberg, and ensure their staff are continually supported through above-average wages, professional training and career development.

Water usage is significant when tanning leather, which can have devastating effects on the local environment. On average, it takes 450 litres of water to produce a hide of tanned leather; Terracare use less than 100 litres, and treat their used water so it can be recycled back into the production process.

Heinen use technology to then clean and desalinate their used water to return it to the local ecosystem, often cleaner than when they extracted it.

Through using technology, Heinen have reduced the amount of water used per square metre of leather, in some processes by 80%.

While tanneries use on average 40 kWh (kilowatt-hours) of energy to produce just one square metre of leather, Heinen have tested and measured their production to use only a quarter of the average, coming in at 9 KWh.

This incredible standard of leather is used for Duckfeet shoes, and we want to promote the longevity of your shoes, and so encourage resoling your shoes. We offer a resole service to make your leather shoes last longer.

This means your shoes can continue to be worn after resoling, reducing your impact on the environment.

Production

We are often asked where our shoes are made.

Duckfeet shoes have been made in the same factory in Poland for the last 20 years. This factory is the last remaining of what was a traditional Polish shoe making town.

As trade changed with globalisation and manufacturing moved off shore to cheaper factories, the town began to slow their production. Duckfeet shoes have continued to be produced here, because of the knowledge and skill of the craftsman stitching and cutting in the workshop.

From human hands to human feet, Duckfeet shoes are built up over the last, stitched, and boxed up in this workshop.

The staff are experienced and make Duckfeet shoes with full knowledge of how each component of the shoe works for our bodies.

We have visited both Heinen Leather and our Polish workshops, and at both factories we were able to experience the production process. The employees were genuinely interested in their work; they were exceptionally loyal, and felt valued by their work place and employers.

In Poland, the staff played a trick on Simon, by asking him to make them a pair of shoes. With no experience, they helped him operate the machines, but the outcome was what we call, “unsaleable”.

It feels funny to say this, yet we are very proud of a product that has such a history of heritage, care, and value, both for the customers and craftsman.

This transparency is what makes our shoes valuable beyond their function; they are a product of tradition, of innovation, and of people.

You can watch your shoes being made in the Polish workshop here. This video features both the staff we met, and the same processes we were educated in.

I love my new red and black boots – super comfy soft sole! I have really slim ankles, so worried that the elastic would float on me, but it arrives firm so that it can shape to each person’s leg. I feel that these boots are going to last me the next 15 years! Well worth the high price so far!

  10. Jane (verified owner)

I wanted to wait a little while before reviewing these because the fit felt a little different at first. I got my usual Duckfeet size but could feel my toes touching the ends just a bit. I thought it was probably just the way the elastic top holds my feet in a slightly forward position when brand new and a bit stiff. They have already softened a bit and I don’t really notice my toes touching anymore. I’m confident this will continue to improve and I look forward to a long and happy relationship with these boots. (I got the Pink and the colour is the absolute best!)
